LOOSH Early Readers Phonics Flashcards
A unique set of 26 flashcard bundles designed specifically to help lay the foundations for literacy in toddlers - one bundle of 5 cards per letter. Created by educators, these flashcards focus on lowercase letters, toddler-relevant vocabulary, and consistent letter sounds to make learning meaningful, engaging, and developmentally appropriate.
Phonics activities help children understand that letters represent sounds, the essential first step towards reading and spelling. By building sound recognition early, little ones develop strong foundations for future literacy success.
Throw 1 or 2 letter bundles in your diaper bag every week and watch your kiddo learn the alphabet and begin sounding out words with ease!
Choose an activity for your child's stage
Toddler stage: Explore the pictures together. Name familiar objects, model their beginning sounds, and invite your child to point or repeat. Listening and looking are participation too.
Preschool and early-reader stage: Match pictures with the same beginning sound, then connect that sound to its lowercase letter. Follow your child's readiness rather than treating this as an age-based test.
Try a 3-minute sound hunt
- Choose one letter bundle and look through the pictures together.
- Say a pictured word slowly, drawing attention to its first sound. Invite your child to copy the sound, without pressure.
- Show two picture cards and ask, “Which one starts with that sound?” Model the answer if needed.
- Look for something nearby that starts with the same sound. Finish while your child is still enjoying the game.
Use the cards for playful, adult-guided practice with vocabulary, listening for beginning sounds, and letter–sound connections. Start with a few cards, repeat favourites, and move on when your child is ready. No quizzes or independent reading required.
